This book is written by an actual descendant of one of the kings of Scotland--Robert Bruce the Great--and he asks, "Who would know more about golf and scotch, than a golf-playing Scot?"

Woodcox took up the game after 25 years of writing ad copy for his own Southern California advertising agency and shares his serious and hilarious adventures with golf, which he says spells "flog" backwards.

For golf nuts or innocent bystanders, he writes, "Golf is part Zen and part masochism--mostly masochism." He delves into the history of the sport and ponders: "Why do people put fuzzy covers on the very same instrument that they slam into the ground at 80 m.p.h....so they won't get scratched?

He asks and answers, "Why are all starters grumpy?" Looking to improve his game: "The only way I know to guarantee shaving 20 strokes off my game would be to quit after 16 holes." He calls instructors "therapists", reveals how one company retrieves more than 150,000 balls out of one pond, on one course alone each year and reveals how you can know which color balls are right for you. All in all, a hilarious and very irreverent look at him and the game we all love to hate.
